Quantum physics is the science of how the smallest things in the universe behave, including atoms and particles of light. At that scale, something unusual happens: measuring a particle changes it. That one strange fact could reshape internet security.

From bits to qubits

A normal computer uses bits, each one a 0 or a 1. Quantum technology uses qubits, which can exist as a combination of both until the moment they are measured.

Light carries the key

Qubits can travel through fiber as tiny particles of light, and those particles can be used to create an encryption key between two points.

Eavesdropping leaves a mark

Measuring a particle changes it. In principle, anyone intercepting the key disturbs its quantum state, the way a sealed envelope shows a mark the moment someone opens it.

A disturbed key gets thrown away

The two ends can compare notes, spot that the key was disturbed, and build a fresh one before anything sensitive is sent.
